Dangers of Bullying

Many of us has heard of the growing problem of bullying in schools. You may have heard about the new movie coming out about the damaging effects of bullying called Bully. In Lord of the Flies William Golding creates characters that are bullied and are bullies. Although he takes the bullying to extremes, there is no doubt that bullying is a bad thing in his novel.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Answer the following questions in your comments:
How does bullying affect characters in the novel Lord of the Flies? What are bullies like? Why do you think the bullies act the way they do? How do the bullies affect others? Now, in at least 3-5 sentences for the persuasive part, tell us how you would stop bullying and why your method would work. What needs to be done to stop bullying? (Make sure to use the skills and methods of persuasion we discussed in class)

Welcome!

Welcome tenth grade writers, to the Call of the Conch Blog! You may wonder why this is called the Call of the Conch Blog. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding a conch shell is used by one of the characters as a way to bring everyone together to talk about their situation. This blog (like the conch shell) serves as a way for everyone to come together in community and say their opinions.

On  this blog you will be able to use persuasive skills to talk about the novel Lord of the Flies and eventually we will start to compare it with the other books we will be reading in the next two units. I will let you know every time an assignment will be posted and when it is due.

Unlike many of the assignments you have done in this class, this is a public forum. This means that anyone can read what you are posting about the assigned topic. This is a wonderful way to involve your parents who might have been reading the novel with you since they can post their thoughts as well. Some of the other teachers and faculty in the school will also be posting their comments with us as we discuss Lord of the Flies and other books to be covered.

Here are some rules to be aware of when posting comments.

  1. Be respectful above everything else. I do not want to see harsh, hurtful, or cruel remarks directed at other posts. You can respectfully disagree with other posts. It's important to remember that everyone can  see your posts.
  2. Read the other posts! There are lots of other unique ideas and perspectives being contributed by the other students and posters.
  3. Use grammatically correct language. It is important to keep things as grammatically correct as possible so that everyone can understand what you are trying to say.
  4. Have fun! This is your chance to say what you want to say about various class related topics!
